Mrs. Karen Adams - Library Aide

Mrs. Adams is a native of Galax, VA and graduated from Galax High School.  She has lived in Galax most of her life with the exception of a short period in the Washington, D.C. area.  She has two daughters who also graduated from Galax High School.

She began her work with Galax City Schools at the Middle School in 2001, as the Resource Aide.  In 2011, she transferred to the Galax High School Library where she is currently the library aide.

“I love to read, so working in the library surrounded by books is wonderful!  I love to see students get excited when they find a book they are eager to dive into.”

Pam Key - Secretary/Bookkeeper

Mrs.Key has lived in Galax,Va. all her life and graduated from Grayson County High School. She has 3 children who attend Galax High and Middle School.

She began her work with Galax City Schools in 2001 as a substitute teacher. In 2007 she began working as an aide at Galax Elementary School. In 2011 she moved to Galax Middle School as a Special Ed. Aide.

She loves her job and being on the same schedule as her children.

Mrs. Iroler


Mrs. Iroler formally entered the teaching profession in 2001 after graduating from Emory & Henry College with her teaching certification and a double major in Spanish and English.  Her experiences living overseas during high school and studying at Cristobal Jr./Sr. High School in Colón, Panama and Bitburg American High School in Bitburg, Germany shaped her love for languages.  She relishes the opportunity to share that love for languages and culture with students in Galax City Public Schools, where she has served since 2011.  Bringing ten years of experience as a high school foreign language instructor (Spanish 1 - 5) with her to GCPS, she began her tenure in Galax teaching 6th & 7th Grade Spanish, Middle School Reading, and Spanish I.  Now that she has earned a Master's Degree in Education and TESOL endorsement from Regent University, she has shifted her focus to ESL Reading in both the co-taught and pull-out setting for 5th, 6th, & 7th graders.

Mr. Ronald Mankins

Ronald Mankins is a lifelong resident of Carroll County and currently resides with his wife (Angela) and son (Hunter) in his hometown of Cana. Ronald graduated from Carroll County High School in 1997 and earned a Bachelor’s of Art in Finance and Economics from King College in 2001. After a brief stint in the banking field, Ronald decided that his interests lie in working with today’s youth.

Ronald’s first three years of public education were in Carroll County where he worked to achieve certification in business education. After transferring over to Galax City Schools in 2005, Ronald pursued an additional degree and received his Masters of Science in Education in December of 2008.

Ronald currently works with fifth and seventh grade students and enjoys the pace and flow of the middle school. His favorite aspect of teaching is watching students gain the confidence to accomplish things they never realized they had the ability to do.

Mrs. Jennifer Harold - Art

Mrs. Harold is from Cana, Virginia and graduated from Carroll County High School in 1989. She earned an Associate Degree from Surry Community College and then a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2001.  She continued to work in accounting and human resources while maintaining her part-time business designing jewelry, accessories, and toys. Mrs. Harold began her career in education as a volunteer in St. Paul School and has worked as an on-call and long-term substitute teacher for Carroll County Public Schools for two school years. She is licensed in K-12 Art and Middle School Science and joins Galax Middle School as the art teacher.

“Teaching art is not about discovering artists; teaching art is providing a learnable skill set to all students and fostering growth in art making abilities.  There is no right or wrong way to draw, only different ways of drawing.”

Miss. Allison Deel - Band

Miss Deel currently serves as Band Director of Galax City Public Schools. Before coming to Galax, Miss Deel held the band director position at Graham Middle & High Schools, in Bluefield, and before that held the band director position in Bland County.


Miss Deel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with Teacher Licensure, from Bluefield College. Her primary instrument is flute. However, she also plays piccolo, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, piano, as well as sings.                                                                         


During her time at Bluefield College, she performed in many instrumental ensembles, including the Bluefield College Chamber Ensemble, Bluefield College Concert Band, and Bluefield College Community Orchestra.  She has also performed in the choral ensembles of the non-auditioned choir Bluefield Singers, as well as the auditioned choir Variations.  As a member of Variations, Miss Deel toured Austria, in summer of 2010, and in the summer of 2011, was part of a larger choir who had the privilege of performing the Brahms Requiem at Lincoln Center, in New York. 


Before attending Bluefield College, Miss Deel attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. While there, she marched for one semester with the Liberty University “Spirit of the Mountain” Marching Band, where she played piccolo.

Ms. Smith - 5th & 6th Grade P.E./Health

Ms. Smith grew up in the Galax area and graduated from Galax High School in 1999. After graduating she continued her education at Emory and Henry College in Emory, VA. While there she received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 2002.

Ms. Smith began her teaching career in Wythe County in 2002 where she taught middle school PE for two years before coming to Galax Middle School. While at Galax Middle School she has taught 5th, 6th and 7th grade Health and Physical Education.

In the middle school PE department we strive to equip our students with the tools and skills needed to lead healthy and productive lifestyles. “There is nothing more rewarding than helping a student reach their full potential.”

Mrs. Hall - Technology

Mrs. Hall grew up in Wise, VA where she graduated from J.J. Kelly High School in 2003. She went on to study at Tusculum College in Greenville, TN and then to the University of Virginia’s College at Wise where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Business Education.

After moving to Carroll County in 2008, Mrs. Hall began her teaching career at Galax Middle School. Mrs. Hall has taught 5th, 6th, and 7th grade Computer Technology from 2008 to the present.

Outside of her teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Hall also coaches the Middle School Track team.

“I love teaching children how to use technology and give them the skills that they will be able to use for the rest of their life. I enjoy seeing their excitement when they’ve learned something new. I believe that technology reaches students in a way that few other mediums can.  Technology ignites a fire, an aspiration to learn, and gives them the ability to express themselves in meaningful ways.

Mrs. Shelia Ramey - Science

Mrs. Ramey grew up in the Galax area and graduated from Carroll County High School in 1992. She continued her education at Wytheville Community College for one year before transferring to Bluefield College. She earned a B.S. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Bluefield College in 1995. Since beginning her teaching career she has completed additional coursework at Wytheville Community College, Radford University, University of Virginia, and Mary Washington University.

Mrs. Ramey began her teaching career at Galax Middle School in 1996. She has taught 8th grade Physical Science, 7th grade Life Science, and one year of sixth grade science. In addition to teaching Life Science daily, Mrs. Ramey teaches a Career Focus class to 7th grade students. Mrs. Ramey is also the middle school’s National Junior Honor Society Adviser.

“I truly enjoy teaching middle school students…there’s never a dull moment and always lots of entertainment! Seventh grade is a wonderful year for students. We learn about so many interesting topics. It’s also fun to see the world outside of the classroom with our students. Seventh graders participate in many ‘adventures’ throughout the year. I enjoy getting to know each of my students during the school year and also continuing to watch them grow and celebrate their accomplishments for years to come!”

Mrs. Lora Iroler-Williams - English/Reading

Mrs. Iroler-Williams was raised in the Riverside area of Fries, Virginia. She graduated from the former Fries High School in 1984. Upon graduating she attended Radford University and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Early/Middle Education.

She began her teaching career in Grayson County for two years before coming to Galax Elementary to pilot the Pre-K program. In 1992 she moved to Northern Virginia where she taught Language Arts and Social Studies for three years. Since returning to Galax, she has taught 6th and 7th grade Language Arts at Galax Middle School.

Mrs. Cathy Parks - English/Reading

Mrs. Parks grew up in the twin county area and graduated from Independence High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Early/Middle Education from Radford University in 1990. She taught Eighth Grade English and Art 8 at Independence Middle School for ten years. In 2000, she began her teaching career at Galax Middle School as the art teacher. Two years later, she became the Sixth Grade Language Arts teacher.

Mrs. Parks is a strong believer in lifelong learning. Over the years, she has earned her Master of Art in Education degree in Reading from Emory & Henry College and has completed additional coursework at Radford University, earning her the Administration K-12 endorsement. She also holds endorsements in middle school social studies, middle school math, and Algebra I.

When she is not in school, she enjoys spending time hiking and traveling with her husband, Marty, and two sons, Trevor and Graham.

Mrs. Jessica Farina - Math

Jessica Farina is our sixth grade math teacher at Galax Middle School. She grew up in neighboring Grayson County where she graduated from Grayson County High School in 1994.  Mrs. Farina received an Associate Degree from Wytheville Community College before continuing her studies at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.  Here she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with endorsements in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Prior to teaching in Galax, Mrs. Farina worked ten years for the Grayson County School System.  She began her career at the elementary level with teaching experiences in the second, fourth, and fifth grades. For the past five years her area of concentration has been middle school math.


“I realize that math is difficult for many students. It is my goal to make math concepts easier to understand, so students can master their SOL objectives. I would like for each of them to enjoy math.”
