Justin Iroler - Galax Middle School Principal

Justin Iroler is a Carroll County native graduating from Carroll County High School in 1996.  He received a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education from Emory and Henry College in 2000 and began his teaching career at Oakland Elementary School. During his tenure at Oakland Elementary School, Mr. Iroler graduated from Radford University earning his Master's of Science in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Radford University in 2005.  After serving the community of Oakland for five years, Mr. Iroler was named the Assistant Principal of Galax Middle School in 2005. He served GMS for five years and was named the Assistant Principal at Galax High School in 2010 and was named Principal of Galax High School in May 2013. He served GHS as Principal for five years and was recently named Principal of Galax Middle School on June 12, 2018.        


Mr. Iroler shared, “I am very excited and thankful to be returning to Galax Middle School after serving Galax High School for the past eight  years. Student success only derives from a community working together for a common purpose, “the success of all students.” I have always lived by the motto, “You get what you put in” and Galax students, day in and day out, put in the time and effort to make our school system a school community we can all be proud of; and for this, I am grateful.”

Amanda Bolen

Amanda Griffin Bolen is a native of Carroll County and graduated from CCHS in 1996. She earned a B.A. in English with a concentration in creative writing from Hollins University in 2000. She spent five years in the newspaper business before finding her calling in education. She earned her teaching certificate through the Career Switcher Program in 2007. Ms. Bolen taught sixth and seventh grade English in Floyd County from 2007-2010, before leaving the classroom to be at home with her children Mina and Griffin.  Ms. Bolen now calls Galax home. Since returning to the area in 2014, she has been a part of Chestnut Creek School of the Arts as a juried consignment artist and an instructor. At CCSA, she has enjoyed teaching GCPS students during enrichment classes as part of the 21 st Century Grant program and Intersession. She is excited to return to middle school again as a Special Education Aide at GMS. She started working for GCPS in 2018.  When not working with students, she is busy making handmade jewelry and playing with her kids.


Jessica Kidd is from Bassett, Virginia.  She graduated from Bassett High School in 2004 and went on to Bluefield College. There she earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and obtained her teaching license. She began teaching in Galax in 2008 as a 3rd grade teacher. After teaching for a few years, she attended Radford University where she earned her Master's Degree as a Reading Specialist. While at the elementary school, she has taught 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, and was reading specialist for two years under a state grant position. She now teaches at Galax Middle School as the 5th grade Reading and Language Arts teacher.


Mrs. Kidd lives in Wytheville, Virginia with her husband and her daughter, Lillian. She enjoys reading, crafting, and being outdoors.

Mrs. Dawn Leake - Math

Mrs. Dawn Leake

Dawn Leake is our 5th grade math teacher at Galax Middle School.  She grew up in Michigan and graduated from Atherton High School in 1978.  Mrs. Leake attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, and she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with an endorsement in grades 4 through 8.

Prior to coming to Galax, Mrs. Leake taught 5th grade in Lynchburg, VA, for twelve years before she and her husband relocated to Troutdale, VA.  She taught sixteen years in Grayson County as a 6th grade math teacher until coming to GMS in 2016.   Teaching fifth graders, she’s back where her educational journey began 29 years ago.

Mrs. Leake says, “My goal is to make math easy.  Every student is unique and as a teacher I need to make math as fun and easy for them, so that they can understand and be successful.”

Mr. Howard Mayo

Coach Mayo is originally from Chesterfield i, Virginia and graduated from Lloyd C. Bird High School in 1983. He continued his education at Bluefield College where he received his Bachelors degree in Physical Education and Social Studies in 1988.He play basketball for 4 years .  He has taught and coach at Carroll Co High School, Amelia Co High School, Starmount High School (NC) and Mt Airy, NC . Coach Mayo is married to Deborah Easter Mayo and has three children Alex, Abby, and Adam  and they reside in Fancy Gap, VA

 Coach Mayo is currently the Strength and Conditioning Coach and the Girls Basketball Coach at Galax High School. Coach Mayo is looking forward to working with students from both the high school and middle school

Mrs. Sena Parks

Mrs. Sena Parks has lived in Galax all of her life, she is a 1992 graduate of Galax High School.  She is married with 2 wonderful daughters.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Radford University in 1996. She worked in sales and marketing for 10 years before obtaining her Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Liberty University in 2007. She then began teaching in the Grayson County School System in 2010, while teaching and working in technology there she received her Master’s Degree in Educational Technology for Liberty University in 2017. Mrs. Parks loves teaching Business and Technology to all grade levels and is very happy to be doing so back “home” at Galax High School.

Ms. Rebecca Montgomery

Rebecca Montgomery grew up in Somerset, Kentucky but has been a resident of Southwest Virginia for the past 23 years. She is married and has two teenage daughters. She is actively involved in her church, First Baptist Church of Independence, where her husband is the pastor. Rebecca and her husband enjoy high school sports and spending time with family.  

Rebecca earned her Bachelors’ degree in Political Science at Eastern Kentucky University in 1991. During her career, she worked as an office manager for two medical clinics and a Human Resource Director for Carrington Place in Wytheville, Virginia. In 2009, she returned to school at Old Dominion University to pursue her passion for teaching, earning her license as a special education teacher. She was employed by Pulaski County Schools for four years teaching at Pulaski Middle School.  She looks forward to teaching students at the elementary level and helping prepare them for the challenges of middle school and beyond.


Ashton Hall

Ashton Hall is a native of Fancy Gap, Virginia. In 2010, she graduated from Wytheville Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.

Nurse Hall brings with her five years of nursing experience. Her previous work experience includes three years in the Medical/Surgical Department at Twin County Regional Hospital, one year at Twin County Orthopedics, and one year on the Women’s Health Unit at Twin County Regional Hospital. Her spark in nursing began when she was a preteen. She would often give her Grandfather insulin injections and assist with his meals.

Nurse Hall is family oriented. She enjoys family vacations with her Husband and two sons, reading, and cooking.

Nurse Hall looks forward to working with the students, parents, faculty, and staff at Galax Middle School.

Mrs. Jan Embree - Civics and Economics

Mrs. Embree has lived in Galax for six years. She is a Nebraska native and lived in Denver, Colorado for 14 years. She is a lifelong learner and educator. She has a degree in Christian Education, Bachelor of Science- Interdisciplinary Studies, PreK-6, and is endorsed in Social Studies 6-12 by the Commonwealth of Virginia. She is currently pursuing a Masters in History through the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

“I am excited to be living in the beautiful mountains of Southwest Virginia and am honored to be a part of Galax City Schools. I am looking forward to sharing my love for our country, our commonwealth, and our great city with the students at Galax Middle School.”

Mr. Chad Stanley - History

Mr. Stanley has lived most of his life in the Fries area of Grayson County.  He graduated from Grayson County High School in 1990.  He then earned his bachelor of science degree from Radford University.  Mr. Stanley began his teaching career at Galax Middle School in 1994 where he has taught until present.  During these years, Mr. Stanley has taught sixth grade U.S. History and seventh grade Civics and Economics.  Mr. Stanley's goals for his students include helping them become engaged in government and the political processes of our great country.

Mrs. Angie Leonard- Math 7 and Geometry

Mrs. Leonard grew up in Carroll County, Virginia where she graduated from Carroll County High School.  She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Virginia Intermont College and a Master's degree in Special Education from Old Dominion University; however, because of her passion for mathematics education, Mrs. Leonard pursued and obtained her endorsement to teach middle school math.



Mrs. Leonard began her teaching career at Grayson County Public School’s Independence Elementary in 2001 as a Special Education teacher. In 2005, she was hired as a special education teacher at Galax High School. While at Galax High School, she primarily co-taught in the inclusion math settings which included such classes as Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Algebra Functions and Data Analysis, and Computer Math. Mrs. Leonard presently teaches seventh grade math at Galax Middle School.

Mrs. Sabrina Anders - Social Studies

Mrs. Anders is from Alleghany County, North Carolina.  She graduated from Alleghany High School.  She then went on to Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. 

Mrs. Anders began teaching at Galax Elementary in 2008.  In her years at GES she has taught Pre-Kindergarten, 3rd grade, and 4th grade.

Ms. Megan Chilton

Ms. Megan Chilton grew up in Collinsville, Virginia, where she graduated from Fieldale-Collinsville High School in 2002. After high school, Megan attended Bluefield College. In 2005 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Sciences and minored in Criminal Justice. While attending Bluefield College, Megan was also a member of the Women's Soccer Team. In 2007, Megan completed her Master of Science degree  at Radford University, where she studied Counseling and Human Development, concentrating in School Counseling.

Prior to joining Galax City Public Schools, Megan worked her first eight years as a school counselor in Carroll County. Her first three years she worked as a part time counselor at both Hillsville Elementary School and St. Paul School. She worked as the full time counselor at Hillsville Elementary School her last five years in Carroll County. Ms. Chilton is currently the School Counselor at Galax Middle School. 

Mrs. Mary Hines - Custodian

Mary Hines was born in Fredrick, Maryland.  She moved to Virginia as a young girl.  She is married to Charles Randall Hines.  She has two sons, Jonathan Ray and Christopher Lee.  She has five grandchildren.  She has worked as a custodian and in the cafeteria for Galax City Public Schools since 2008.  Mrs. Hines says “I love what I do.  I’ve met a lot of good people.  I’m blessed to be a part of Galax City Public Schools.”

Mr. Eddie Stanley - Custodian

Mr. Eddie Stanley  has worked for Galax City Public Schools since 1987.  He worked at Galax Elementary School for 20 years.  He is currently the custodian at Galax Middle School. 

Mrs. Karen Adams - Library Aide

Mrs. Adams is a native of Galax, VA and graduated from Galax High School.  She has lived in Galax most of her life with the exception of a short period in the Washington, D.C. area.  She has two daughters who also graduated from Galax High School.

She began her work with Galax City Schools at the Middle School in 2001, as the Resource Aide.  In 2011, she transferred to the Galax High School Library where she is currently the library aide.

“I love to read, so working in the library surrounded by books is wonderful!  I love to see students get excited when they find a book they are eager to dive into.”

Pam Key - Secretary/Bookkeeper

Mrs.Key has lived in Galax,Va. all her life and graduated from Grayson County High School. She has 3 children who attend Galax High and Middle School.

She began her work with Galax City Schools in 2001 as a substitute teacher. In 2007 she began working as an aide at Galax Elementary School. In 2011 she moved to Galax Middle School as a Special Ed. Aide.

She loves her job and being on the same schedule as her children.
