GMS and NASA
Galax Middle School's 21st Century Community Learning Center afterschool program has been selected to receive a grant to partner with the U. S. Department of Education and NASA in the NASA STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Challenge this school year. Monday and Tuesday of this week, Cindy Joines-Huff, Sonia Truitt, Lora Iroler-Williams, Shelia Ramey, and Jennifer Harold participated in a Train the Trainer workshop with NASA at the Virginia Space Consortium in Hampton, Virginia. The training was hands-on and required our instructors to work in small groups to complete two different STEM challenges. They also received guidance in selecting students and how to mentor them throughout the challenge process. This program targets the students in our 21st CCLC after school program and further exposes them to the world of science, technology, engineering and math. It also introduces them to many possible careers in STEM and with NASA.
