Mr. Derrick Spence, Principal of Galax Middle School

Mr. Spence, a native of Hillsville, Virginia, graduated from Carroll County High School and went on to study Music Education at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.  After graduating with his Bachelor’s from ASU, he studied Educational Leadership at Radford University were he received a Master’s of Science.

Before coming to Galax, Mr. Spence worked in the Wythe County School System as band director of George Wythe High School for seven years.  During that time, he also served as administrative assistant at Scott Memorial Middle School in Wytheville. 

 “I enjoy working with kids, their parents, and teachers.  And I enjoy watching kids grow up and helping them learn how to make good decisions.  I wanted to make a positive contribution to the community in which I live, this is why I came to Galax;” said Spence.

Mrs. Sonia Truitt, Assistant Principal at Galax Middle School

Mrs. Truitt is a native of Galax, Virginia and a graduate of Galax High School.  After high school she attended Radford University and received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education.  She continued her education at Emory and Henry College where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Education with a Reading Specialist certification. Additional coursework at Radford University led to licensure in Educational Leadership and Administration.

Mrs. Truitt began her teaching career in Grayson County. She later accepted a position with Galax City Public Schools where she served as the Early Intervention Reading teacher and Reading Specialist. In 2010 she became the Assistant Principal at Galax Elementary School. In July 2015, Mrs. Truitt moved to the position of Assistant Principal at Galax Middle School.

“Working within the Galax City Public School system is such a rewarding experience. The opportunities to learn, grow, and develop professionally are abundant. Each day finds me surrounded by caring colleagues, strong leadership, dedicated parents, and most especially truly remarkable children.  I sincerely enjoy the challenges of education and the opportunities I have had to make learning happen for students.  I feel so blessed to be part of such a great system!”
